OLGA: A farewell concert
December 15-23
Aurora Theatre Company
You are cordially invited back to the home of Olga Sergeyevna Prozorova for an evening of sweet hellos, stirring songs, and bitter farewells. Soldiers encouraged.
Beth Wilmurt (The Eccentricities of a Nightingale and Jack Goes Boating at Aurora; Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Hamlet at Shotgun Players) has been exploring Anton Chekhov’s Olga since she played the role in Yes Yes To Moscow, a dance-theatre piece based on Chekov’s Three Sisters.
With support from Aurora Theatre Company’s new works program Originate + Generate, Wilmurt has been developing a theatrical music performance centered around Olga, exploring the enigmatic character’s mind and imagination through songs. “She laughs” and “she cries” are two of the most frequent stage directions in Chekhov’s play, provoking themes of loss and longing that intermingle with bursts of joy and celebration.
For two weeks this December, Aurora hosts Wilmurt and her band for a rousing evening of theatrical songs inspired by Chekhov’s Russians, viewed through a contemporary American lens. Snowy Siberia meets the American songbook in the poignant and imaginative performance.
