Professor Veidlinger’s new book focuses on the ways Buddhism has adapted to different technological environments over time, and this talk will examine how Buddhism is responding to the challenges and opportunities of the Internet in today’s world. Questions about the malleability of personal identity that cyberspace and virtual worlds have created resonate strongly with some of the classic ideas of selflessness in Buddhism, and the awareness of the suffering of others that our screen can deliver as never before also fits well into Buddhism’s emphasis on the importance of compassion.
