Patricia Berger: A Passion for Grapes

September 24, 2016 @ 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm
BAMPFA, 2155 Center Street
Berkeley, CA 94720 United States
+ Google Map

In this lecture UC Berkeley professor Patricia Berger considers Wen Riguan's early fourteenth-century Grapes, one of the most important early Chinese paintings in the BAMPFA collection (on view in Summer Trees Casting Shade). The artist was a well-known Buddhist abbot in the southern city of Hangzhou, equally renowned for a fluid use of the brush and an obsession with grapes. Berger will explore what Wen's focus on grapes tells us about his Buddhist practice and the reception of the painting…

Ida Lupino: Hard, Fast, and Beautiful BAMPFA January 13th - February 24th Start this new year off learning about Ida Lupino - through this selection of films, featuring Lupino's acting, writing, production and direction. Energetic, resourceful, and intelligent, Ida Lupino (1918-1995) left her indelible impression on cinema from both sides of the camera. Despite her success as an actor, Lupino was frustrated by the lack of interesting parts for women and the constraints of the studio system. In 1947 she…

RBG at BAMPFA  October 5th 4-6 PM  This affectionate portrait of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an unexpected popular hit, not unlike the tiny, soft-spoken eighty-five-year-old jurist herself. The film looks beyond the SNL sketches and “Notorious” memes to outline Ginsburg’s role as a dissenting voice on an increasingly conservative court and her equally crucial earlier career as a patient and persistent litigator for women’s rights. Between glimpses of her workout routine, her opera fandom, and her collection…

Home of the magician Howl, the castle soon becomes Sophie’s home, as she struggles to regain her youthful…

In art—as in many things—going it alone has its advantages, but collaboration, whether fraught or harmonious, gets amazing things done. Works on view this session: a dozen Qing dynasty artists (including Gong Xian and Hongren) and an equal number of calligraphers combine in a stellar album of Chinese landscapes; Hiroshige and Hokusai get credit for wonderful ukiyo-e prints, but unsung draftsmen, carvers, and printers do most of the heavy lifting; the collectives Ant Farm and T. R. Uthco go to…
