SUMMARY:Jupiter Presents: Joseph's Bones
DESCRIPTION:An instrumental trombone reggae band\, performing composer/drummer Jason Levis’ original compositions as well as arrangements of reggae classics from Bob Marley to Augustus Pablo and Burning Spear. The ensemble features old-school roots reggae grooves inspired by Studio One\, Island and Trojan records\, and the echo heavy wash of dub artists such as King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry. The hard-hitting\, heavy one-drop rhythm section is counterbalanced by the singing harmonies of the trombones and live dub soundscapes of the guitars. \nFacebook

SUMMARY:Freight & Salvage Presents: JJ Grey Solo - Front Porch Sessions
DESCRIPTION:From the days of playing greasy local juke joints to headlining major festivals\, JJ Grey remains an unfettered\, blissful performer\, singing with a blue-collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. His presence before an audience is something startling and immediate\, at times a funk rave-up\, other times a sort of mass-absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. \n \n\nOnstage\, Grey delivers his songs with compassion and a relentless honesty\, but perhaps not until Ol’ Glory has a studio record captured the fierceness and intimacy that defines a Grey live performance. “I wanted that crucial lived-in feel\,” Grey says of Ol’ Glory\, and here he hits his mark. On the new album\, Grey and his current Mofro lineup offer grace and groove in equal measure\, with an easygoing quality to the production that makes those beautiful muscular drum-breaks sound as though the band has set up in your living room. \nDoors open at 7. \n\nFacebook | Instagram | Website

SUMMARY:Downtown Berkeley Plaza Presents: The Soundscape Listening Party
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a listening party for “Immersion\,” an immersive sound installation by Maggi Payne at Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza. \nSaturday\, September 21st from 8:30 pm-10:00pm. \n“Immersion-Bay Area Soundscape” is a discrete eight-channel installation using sounds of nature the artist recorded in the Bay Area over many years. The sonic environment this work creates is reminiscent of sounds that once likely existed in this very location-windstorms\, thunder\, rain\, streams\, a seashore\, underwater sounds\, frogs\, crickets\, and birds. “Immersion” follows water from storm to creek and ocean portraying nature’s water cycle\, which is so critical to the life of this planet. Sounds travel both laterally and through the four pairs of speakers\, providing an immersive experience for people standing still or traversing the space. For more information on the artist’s work visit www.maggiepayne.com. \nSample Work: Through the Looking Glass excerpt ©2015 Maggi Payne \n \nMaggi Payne is Co-Director (since 1992) of the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College\, Oakland\, CA\, where she teaches recording engineering\, composition\, and electronic music. She also freelances as a recording engineer and editor and a historical remastering engineer. She enjoys collaborating with other artists and has worked with video artist Ed Tannenbaum for over twenty years. She is also a flutist\, and has written several works for flute as well as other acoustic instruments.
