SUMMARY:BAMPFA Presents: Rock ’n’ Film: Cinema’s Dance with Popular Music
DESCRIPTION:Illustrated lecture with David E. James! \nIn his book Rock ’n’ Film: Cinema’s Dance with Popular Music\, David E. James explores how rock’s capacity for cultural empowerment and its usefulness as a driver of commerce and profit were reproduced in various kinds of cinema: independent documentaries and concert films including Monterey Pop and Gimme Shelter\, narrative films such as King Creole and Privilege\, and the experimental cinema of artists like Kenneth Anger. In his lecture James will explore the rich legacy of cinema’s dance with popular music and what these films share with classic film musicals. \nFor more info

SUMMARY:Berkeley Portrait Project Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Berkeley Portrait Project Opening Reception \n6-8PM\, Sat. April 6th \nDavid Brower Center  \nPlease join us for a celebratory opening reception for the Berkeley Portrait Project\, a pop-up exhibition of photographs by Orin Rutchick on view at the David Brower Center Saturday\, April 6 through Sunday\, May 5. \nFrom October 2017 through April 2018\, Rutchick set up a small portable studio on the corner of Adeline and Harmon Streets and shot portraits of local residents. For many\, these photographs were the only formal portraits they had of themselves since childhood or their teenage years. The images became a source of pride\, both for how they saw themselves and for how they were seen by others. \nMore info:

SUMMARY:Teton Gravity Research: Far Out
DESCRIPTION:Teton Gravity Research: Far Out\nOctober 12th 6-9 pm \nThe UC Theatre \nJoin the TGR crew on one of its boldest missions ever. The film follows the perspective of an athlete as he embarks on a journey to one of the most remote and unexplored mountain ranges on the planet\, the Albanian Alps. While the final destination appears to be the ultimate goal\, it is the collective of athletes\, experiences\, and the array of locations around the world that inevitably drive the season’s adventure. Witness mind-bending pillow lines as the crew camps out deep in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia. Experience urban madness in Kamchatka and the insanity of the Crazy Mountains in Montana. Join the crew in the Slovenian Alps for over-the-head cold smoke and watch an 11-year-old rip Jackson Hole. Discover the alien landscape of Girdwood\, Alaska in January and see Sean Jordan ride into Crested Butte on a black stallion to shred the Southern Rockies. Find out if the wildest and most untamed mountains in Europe let us in\, and if the ultimate destination became a reality. \nGet Tickets

SUMMARY:RBG
DESCRIPTION:RBG at BAMPFA  \nOctober 5th 4-6 PM  \nThis affectionate portrait of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an unexpected popular hit\, not unlike the tiny\, soft-spoken eighty-five-year-old jurist herself. The film looks beyond the SNL sketches and “Notorious” memes to outline Ginsburg’s role as a dissenting voice on an increasingly conservative court and her equally crucial earlier career as a patient and persistent litigator for women’s rights. Between glimpses of her workout routine\, her opera fandom\, and her collection of ornate judicial neckwear\, it also profiles her long partnership with the staunchest admirer of her legal mind\, husband Marty Ginsburg\, making the case that gender equality begins at home.

SUMMARY:Ida Lupino: Hard\, Fast\, and Beautiful Coming to BAMPFA
DESCRIPTION:Ida Lupino: Hard\, Fast\, and Beautiful\n\n\nBAMPFA\n\n\n\n\nJanuary 13th – February 24th\n\n\n\nStart this new year off learning about Ida Lupino – through this selection of films\, featuring Lupino’s acting\, writing\, production and direction. \nEnergetic\, resourceful\, and intelligent\, Ida Lupino (1918-1995) left her indelible impression on cinema from both sides of the camera. Despite her success as an actor\, Lupino was frustrated by the lack of interesting parts for women and the constraints of the studio system. In 1947 she left Warner Bros.\, and as a free agent began writing\, producing\, and ultimately directing films in addition to acting. \nGet Tickets

SUMMARY:Martin Wong: Human Instamatic at BAMPFA
DESCRIPTION:Martin Wong: Human Instamatic\nBAMPFA\nSeptember 20–December 10\, 2017\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition surveys the career of Chinese American painter Martin Wong (1946–1999)\, from his early years painting street portraits in Northern California—where he dubbed himself the “Human Instamatic”—to his role in New York’s gritty downtown art scene in the 1970s and 1980s and his late work in San Francisco before his untimely death from AIDS. \nWong was born in Portland\, Oregon\, and grew up near San Francisco’s Chinatown. After a year at UC Berkeley\, he studied ceramics at Humboldt State University in Eureka. During the 1970s\, dividing his time between Eureka and San Francisco\, he made scroll poems in idiosyncratic calligraphy and designed sets for psychedelic experimental theater groups the Cockettes and Angels of Light.
