SUMMARY:Wolf Parade at UCTheatre
DESCRIPTION:Wolf Parade at UCTheatre\n\n\nUCTheatre\nJanuary 17th\n\n\n\n\n\nCanadian indie rock band formed in 2003 in Montreal\, Quebec. \nThe soaring choruses\, rousing anthems\, sprawling guitars and chaotic keys that make up Wolf Parade are on proud display over the course of Cry Cry Cry\, the band’s thunderous first album in seven years. \nThat unique combination of sounds and influences\, spearheaded by electric co-frontmen Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner-a complex yet relatable\, energetic brew of glam\, prog\, synth-rock\, and satisfying discomfort-helped define 2000s indie rock with three critically celebrated albums\, and propelled a growing Wolf Parade fandom even after the band went on a then-indefinite hiatus in 2010…More Band Info \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n

SUMMARY:Fantastic Negrito at UC Theatre
DESCRIPTION:OCT 14 Fantastic Negrito (pictured) is a man’s truth told in the form of black roots music. Each song is a real story about a musician from Oakland who experienced the highs of a million dollar record deal\, the lows of a near fatal car accident that left him in a coma\, and is now in the phase of rebirth despite his playing hand being mangled. After a long break from music\, Fantastic Negrito won NPR’s inaugural Tiny Desk Contest in 2015. Since then he’s performed with artists including Chris Cornell\, Solange\, and Temple of the Dog\, and this year he will be touring with Sturgill Simpson. His first full-length album The Last Days of Oakland won the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.\nTickets

SUMMARY:Soundtrack of the 60's: Berkeley Music Scene
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit at The Berkeley Historical Society \nOctober 8\, 2017 – April 1\, 2018\n\n\n\n\nWhile Berkeley did not have the large ballrooms of San Francisco\, it had a variety of small clubs and medium sized venues that saw many legendary performances during the decade of the 1960s. The Fall 2017 exhibit of the Berkeley Historical Society will focus on these venues and the unique contribution of Berkeley musicians to 1960s music. \n\n\nThe exhibit draws upon the extensive archives of Country Joe McDonald\, as well as little known photographs from the Historical Society and several private collections. From small folk singer gatherings in private homes to public stages\, Berkeley provided a rich milieu of opportunity for cross genre inspiration and creativity. Country Joe and the Fish\, the Joy of Cooking and Creedence Clearwater Revival all had their start in Berkeley. \n\n\nA timeline of major national and international events will provide context for local musical developments. Other parts of the exhibit will focus on local recording studios\, the Berkeley Folk Festival\, the rock scene\, rhythm and blues\, the role of music in the protest movement and the career of Country Joe McDonald. Clothing and other artifacts of the period will also be on display. \n\n\nThe opening reception\, from 2-5 PM on Sunday\, October 8\, will feature live musical performances by Country Joe McDonald and surprise guests. The exhibit will run through April 1\, 2018. Additional programming during the course of the exhibit will include panel discussions and interviews with people who were active in the 1960s music scene. \n\nHistory Center hours are 1-4 PM\, Thursday through Saturday\n\nAdmission free\, donations welcome; wheelchair accessible\n\nBerkeley Historical Society and Berkeley History Center \n1931 Center Street\, Berkeley\n510-848-0181

SUMMARY:Imaginary Comforts\, or The Story of the Ghost of the Dead Rabbit at the Berkeley Rep
DESCRIPTION:October 5–November 19\, 2017\nBy Daniel Handler\nDirected by Tony Taccone\nGet Tickets \nThe genius behind Lemony Snicket brings his relentlessly mischievous style to a new play for adults. Sarah’s father is dead\, her mother is in hysterics\, and the new rabbi totally bungled the funeral. To further the absurdity\, the ghost of a rabbit hops into her life\, pushing her to confront her deepest issues. Fantastical and wise\, hilarious and sobering\, Imaginary Comforts celebrates ordinary people trying to make sense out of life in the midst of endless\, comedic chaos. More Info \nBerkeley Rep\nMain Season · Peet’s Theatre\n2025 Addison St\,\nBerkeley\, CA 94704

SUMMARY:Arrested Development at UC Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Pioneers of the conscious rap game this Saturday\, 9/23\nDoors: 7:00 pm / Show: 8:00 pm\n\n\n\n\n\nFormed in Atlanta in 1988\, Arrested Development was founded by Speech and his ex-best friend Headliner as a positive\, Afrocentric alternative to the gangsta rap popular in the early 1990s. \n\nIt has been twenty years since a new group called Arrested Development slammed the gangsta dominated world of hip hop with defiant lyrics of hope. Apparently the world was ready for the change as AD became the first ever hip-hop artist to receive the “best new artist” Grammy\, (a distinction it still maintains today in that category). In addition\, the group also received a Grammy award for “best rap single” for their anthemic prayer-like hit song\, Tennessee.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets    *  For More About The UC Theatre\n\nFor Pre and Post Show!\nBring your ticket or the stub over to Bobby G’s Pizzeria and get $1 off pints of beer\, glasses of wine\, and slices before and after the show!\n\n\nClick here for more info.

SUMMARY:The Zombies
DESCRIPTION:The second UK group following the Beatles to score a #1 hit in America\, The Zombies infiltrated the airwaves with the sophisticated melodies\, breathy vocals\, choral back-up harmonies and jazzy keyboard riffs of their 1960’s hit singles like “She’s Not There” and “Tell Her No”. Ironically\, the group broke-up in 1968 just prior to achieving their greatest success – the chart-topping single “Time of the Season”\, from their swan-song album “Odessey & Oracle” (recently ranked #100 in Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”). In the intervening years\, while lead singer Colin Blunstone went on to develop an acclaimed solo career\, and keyboardist/songwriter Rod Argent rocked ‘70’s arenas with his eponymous band ARGENT\, the legend of The Zombies took on a life of its own. Generations of new bands have cited The Zombies’ work as pop touchstones\, including such artists as Neko Case and Nick Cave (who have recorded “She’s Not There” for the popular HBO series True Blood)\, She & Him\, Beck\, Belle and Sebastian\, The Black Angels\, The Fleet Foxes\, Beach House and The Beautiful South. Decades later\, Blunstone and Argent have resurrected The Zombies\, recruiting bassist Jim Rodford (formerly of ARGENT and The Kinks)\, Rodford’s son Steve on drums\, and renowned session guitarist Tom Toomey. The ten songs that make up their latest album\, “Breathe Out\, Breathe In”\, are impeccably crafted; the harmonies are rich\, the melodies full\, the arrangements exquisite\, the organ and piano fresh and the production intuitive. The Huffington Post’s David Wild called the album “inspired” and said “some songs recall the haunting melodic heights of the group’s 1968 masterpiece Odessey and Oracle.” \n  \nGet tickets here

SUMMARY:Tinariwen
DESCRIPTION:The new album by Tinariwen could well have been called Exile on Main Street. But other people have already thought of that. It also could have been called A la recherché du pays perdu (‘Remembrance of a lost country’). Except that would have been a tad Proustian for musicians who grew up pretty much between a rock and a sand dune\, in the midst of their goat herds and camel caravans. But the idea is apt. As is the painful paradox\, if you consider that while Tinariwen were busy criss-crossing the globe on their recent triumphant tours (160 concerts played in the past three years)\, expanding their audience on all five continents\, becoming one of the latest musical phenomena of truly universal calibre\, the frontiers that encircle their desert home were closing down and double-locking\, forcing them into exile to record this their 8th album. \n  \nGet tickets here

SUMMARY:WHY?
DESCRIPTION:The final words sung on the sixth album by WHY? are an apt place to begin: “Hold on\, what’s going on?” Because while there’s much familiar about the oddly named Moh Lhean—mastermind Yoni Wolf’s sour-sweet croon\, his deadpan poet’s drawl and ear for stunningly fluid psych-pop-folk-whatever arrangement—a great deal has changed in the four years that’ve passed since 2012’s Mumps\, Etc.\, an LP that honed the band’s orchestral precision and self-deprecating swagger to a fine point. It’s significant that this is the first fully home-recorded WHY? album since the project’s 2003 debut. Made mostly in Wolf’s studio and co-produced by his brother Josiah\, the result is obsessive\, of course\, but also intimate\, and flush with warmth and looseness. But the biggest transformation is a bit subtler. After years of eying his world\, in part\, with a cynical squint\, Wolf here learns a new mode. While Moh Lhean never stoops to outright optimism\, it chronicles our hero finding peace in the unknowing\, trading the wry smirk for a holy shrug\, and looking past corporeal pain for something more cosmic and\, rest assured\, equally weird. \n  \nGet tickets here
