SUMMARY:How Communication Technology is Shaping Buddhist Ideas
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nHow Communication Technology is Shaping Buddhist Ideas \n7-8:30PM Mon. April 1st \nMangalam Center \nFREE \nProfessor Veidlinger’s new book focuses on the ways Buddhism has adapted to different technological environments over time\, and this talk will examine how Buddhism is responding to the challenges and opportunities of the Internet in today’s world. Questions about the malleability of personal identity that cyberspace and virtual worlds have created resonate strongly with some of the classic ideas of selflessness in Buddhism\, and the awareness of the suffering of others that our screen can deliver as never before also fits well into Buddhism’s emphasis on the importance of compassion. \nMore info: \n

SUMMARY:Again for the First Time with Rhonda Holberton
DESCRIPTION:Again for the First Time with Rhonda Holberton \n6:30PM Mon. April 1st \nBAMPFA \nFREE  \nAs artist Rhonda Holberton talks about her process—describing with her hands the arrangement and heft of the objects that appear in her images—it’s hard not to think of those things and that space as real. But everything\, from the objects themselves to the flawlessly diffuse lighting and cool white marble ground\, is digitally produced. Holberton makes 3D scans of real objects\, then places them in virtual spaces of her own creation using Blender\, an open source software suite. Her recent series braids together the real and virtual worlds so tightly that it becomes nearly impossible to separate one from the other. \nMore info:

SUMMARY:Poland Reborn: A State Between Democracy and Fascism
DESCRIPTION:Poland Reborn: A State Between Democracy and Fascism \nFebruary 26th 5:30 PM\nRVSP by February 22nd \nThe Magnes  \nJohn Connolly\, PhD History Professor at U.C. Berkeley will bring to light Poland’s attitude toward Jews after the end of World War I in 1918. On the one hand it accommodated the demands of freedom fighters; on the other\, it lapsed into authoritarian rule. Developments after 1926 led to xenophobia and discrimination yet fascists were arrested. By the late 1930’s modest hopes for reform arose when Polish and Jewish parties left of center collaborated and Poland became first nation saying no to Hitler’s expanding rule. \nMore info:

SUMMARY:A Conversation with David Presti
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation with David Presti \nDecember 3rd\, 7-8:30 PM \nMangalam Center  \nJoin Mangalam Research Center in celebrating the release of “Mind Beyond Brain: Buddhism\, Science\, and the Paranormal”  a new book by neurocientist David Presti\, a distinguished faculty member at UC Berkeley.\n“Mind Beyond Brain” explores how evidence for anomalous phenomena—such as near-death experiences and apparent memories of past lives—can influence the Buddhism-science dialogue. Contributors describe the history and current state of scientific investigation into these phenomena. In his own essays\, Presti situates the debate that circles around the paranormal and reflects on how greater appreciation for the anomalous could transform the way scientific study of the mind and brain is done.\nThe event begins with a short talk by Presti\, followed by a conversation with Jack Petranker\, Director of Mangalam Research Center\, and Q&A from the audience. Join us afterwards for continued conversation and light refreshments. \nMore Info:

SUMMARY:May in America: A Novel Book Talk with author Annie Wang
DESCRIPTION:May in America: A Novel Book Talk with author Annie Wang\nThu\, September 20\, 2018 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM PDT\nEastwind Books of Berkeley\nFree Event! \n“May in America” is the newest novel from acclaimed Chinese-American author\, Annie Wang. \nMay\, one of the new generations of Chinese rich kids\, has outgrown Beijing and has come to California for an exciting life. She meets two American men: a Jewish-American Harvard-educated professor named Leaf; and Mentor\, a Silicon Valley self-made billionaire. As her relationships with Leaf and Mentor progress\, May’s past traumas in patriarchal China are revealed\, while her cultural naivete leads to divergent interpretations of trust\, personal boundaries\, respect\, fetishism\, and sexual deviancy. May’s life descends into a mad triangle of deception. Desperate\, hurting\, disconnected and suffering from the feeling of being emotionally dead and alone\, May must find the strength to survive. “May in America” reveals the universally evocative themes of love and lust\, darkness and light\, innocence and cynicism\, individuality and co-dependence\, and\, ultimately\, loss and redemption… read more about Annie Wang here. \nRegister Now!
