SUMMARY:5 Sentidos Mezcal Dinner at Comal
DESCRIPTION:5 Sentidos Mezcal Dinner\nAugust 20th & 21st\, 2018\nDoors 6:30PM\nComal \nOn Monday August 20th and Tuesday\, August 21st\, Comal will welcome Jason Cox of Cinco Sentidos for a special mezcal dinner showcasing five of Cinco Sentido’s offerings alongside a menu of Oaxaca-inspired dishes by Comal’s executive chef Matt Gandin. Dinner guests will have the opportunity to engage in conversation with Jason and learn first-hand about his fascinating experiences building relationships with mezcaleros throughout Mexico. \nCinco Sentidos is a project that was born within the framework of El Destilado\, a 36-seat restaurant that opened in 2015 in Oaxaca and has quickly garnered international attention for its innovative tasting menus\, distinctive cocktails\, and thoughtfully curated list of rare mezcals. \nAs co-owner of El Destilado\, Jason began traveling throughout Oaxaca\, Puebla\, Jalisco\, and Michoacán in search of small-batch agave spirits from communities that still practiced traditional production methods. In three years\, he has built working relationships with fifteen different mezcaleros in thirteen pueblos across Mexico. These hyper-local spirits were first offered at El Distilado under the name Cinco Sentidos (“Five Senses”) and\, more recently\, through a few small exportations. \nFor the mezcal dinners\, Cinco Sentidos will showcase their “core five” spirits currently offered for export. A collection of unique small-batch agave spirits made from five different varieties of agave in five different communities\, the “core five” are further distinguished by their individual flavors\, a direct result of each of distillers’ five senses and personal preferences. Each label contains extensive tasting and production notes as well as in-depth background information about the mezcaleros and their distinct approaches. \nThis is the latest in Comal’s “Abajo Dinner Series”\, an ongoing series of beer\, wine\, and spirits producer dinners (previous dinners have featured Del Maguey Mezcal\, Mezcal Vago\, wine companies like Bedrock\, Arnot-Roberts\, Unti\, and Wind Gap and beer companies like Fieldwork\, Henhouse and Social among others) held in Comal’s private dining room\, Abajo. All previous events have sold out in advance. Click to see mezcal and food menu \nGet Tickets for Monday\nGet Ticket for Tuesday

SUMMARY:Sunday Summer Cinema at BAMPFA
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Summer Cinema at BAMPFA\nJune 10–October 14\, 2018\nBAMPFA\nBring A Lawn Chair & Blanket \nBAMPFA\, in partnership with the Downtown Berkeley Association (DBA)\, presents “Dancing in the Streets”\, a summer series of free movie matinees on the museum’s massive outdoor LED screen at Addison and Oxford. These movies are on the second Sunday of each month from June to October – perfect for audiences of all ages to enjoy joyous and entertaining dance movies that will have you dancing in the streets. A section of Addison Street between Oxford Street and Shattuck Avenue will be closed to traffic for each screening\, where audiences can set up their own lawn chairs or picnic blankets in front of the giant outdoor BAMPFA screen—located just a block from the Downtown Berkeley BART station. FREE outside movie event to enjoy with the whole family! \nNext Up! Is The Young Girls of Rochefort \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Young Girls of Rochefort\n10.14.18 / 4:00pm\nJacques Demy (France\, 1967)\n124 minutes \nFEATURING \n\nCatherine Deneuve\, Françoise Dorléac\, Michel Piccoli\, Gene Kelly\, Danielle Darrieux\, \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSee it large—a dance musical as antithetical to the small screen as West Side Story\, whose choreography it emulates and whose star George Chakiris improbably appears here\, along with Gene Kelly\, Mr. American in Paris himself. In the sleepy town of Rochefort\, denizens who somnolently dance sidewise down the street are energized by the arrival of a traveling commercial fair that passes for spectacle. Catherine Deneuve and her talented sister Françoise Dorléac play musical twin sisters who while away the hours in their Barbie-doll outfits until they can hitch a ride to love and fame. In Demy’s clever patter set to Michel Legrand’s music\, their barista mother Danielle Darrieux dreams of a love lost to the silliness of the French language\, and everyone around her pines\, in rhyme\, for a poetic ideal. Billed as a paean to American musicals\, The Young Girls of Rochefort is vintage French: sugary surface\, just a hint of the grotesque\, and legs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Downtown Berkeley restaurants want you to have the most #PerfectPicnic to enjoy while you watch the show!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaison Bleue – Plan ahead and order your #perfectpicnic from this awesome downtown french cafe and bistro. Pictured below is Daniel and his #perfectpicnic includes a delicious Marin sandwich with housemade lox\, a grilled cheesey Croque Monsier with your choice of chips or side salad\, and dessert crepe with bacon known to locals as “the Danny”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nButcher’s Son – Enjoy all of the house-made meats and cheeses in the signature deli style sandwiches. SUMMARY:New Shoe Store Grand Opening at DOPP
DESCRIPTION:New Shoe Store Grand Opening at DOPP\nAugust 5th at 12PM\nDOPP located at 2115 Allston Way \nDOPP Local shoe designer Shayla Dopp is opening a retail space in Trumpetvine Court in downtown Berkeley. The space was formerly occupied by clothing boutique Endorphins. Dopp designs shoes in Oakland and works with a small factory in Los Angeles who hand-makes the final product. “The shoes are made from leather bi-product of the meat industry and are vibrant\, unique and comfortable\,” Dopp said. Before finding the space in downtown\, Dopp previously ran her business from home\, participating in every popup opportunity that came her way. She was immediately drawn to the architecture of the building in Trumpetvine where she said she feels at the heart of all the hustle and bustle. She enjoys the ambience of the garden courtyard of Jupiter and like-minded vendors\, too\, making it an ideal setting for her. “I love being in the center of all the arts and culture here. It’s a beautiful thought to envision all the talent surrounding the space\,” she said. A grand opening will be held Sunday Aug. 5\, from noon to 6 p.m. “I will be welcoming people in for a glass of lavender wine and [will have] a large array of colorful\, comfortable heels\,” she added. Dopp\, 2115 Allston Way #1\, Trumpetvine Court\, Berkeley 94704. A hugely prolific artist who keeps up a high quality release rate\, he has put out more than an incredible 70 full length studio albums since starting out in the 1990s. Born in Kingston\, Jamaica\, he is a keen subscriber of the Bobo Ashanti brand of the Rastafarai movement and studied mechanical engineering at Dunoon High School. He has released on labels like Digital B\, VP\, Greensleeves\, Kalonji Records\, Xterminator Records and others.
