SUMMARY:Sunday Summer Cinema at BAMPFA
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Summer Cinema at BAMPFA\nOctober 14 at 4PM\nBAMPFA\nBring A Lawn Chair & Blanket \nBAMPFA\, in partnership with the Downtown Berkeley Association (DBA)\, presents “Dancing in the Streets”\, a summer series of free movie matinees on the museum’s massive outdoor LED screen at Addison and Oxford. These movies are on the second Sunday of each month from June to October – perfect for audiences of all ages to enjoy joyous and entertaining dance movies that will have you dancing in the streets. A section of Addison Street between Oxford Street and Shattuck Avenue will be closed to traffic for each screening\, where audiences can set up their own lawn chairs or picnic blankets in front of the giant outdoor BAMPFA screen—located just a block from the Downtown Berkeley BART station. FREE outside movie event to enjoy with the whole family! \nNext Up! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Young Girls of Rochefort\n10.14.18 / 4:00pm\nJacques Demy (France\, 1967)\n124 minutes \nFeaturing:  \nCatherine Deneuve\, Françoise Dorléac\, Michel Piccoli\, Gene Kelly\, Danielle Darrieux\, \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSee it large—a dance musical as antithetical to the small screen as West Side Story\, whose choreography it emulates and whose star George Chakiris improbably appears here\, along with Gene Kelly\, Mr. American in Paris himself. In the sleepy town of Rochefort\, denizens who somnolently dance sidewise down the street are energized by the arrival of a traveling commercial fair that passes for spectacle. Catherine Deneuve and her talented sister Françoise Dorléac play musical twin sisters who while away the hours in their Barbie-doll outfits until they can hitch a ride to love and fame. In Demy’s clever patter set to Michel Legrand’s music\, their barista mother Danielle Darrieux dreams of a love lost to the silliness of the French language\, and everyone around her pines\, in rhyme\, for a poetic ideal. Billed as a paean to American musicals\, The Young Girls of Rochefort is vintage French: sugary surface\, just a hint of the grotesque\, and legs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Downtown Berkeley restaurants want you to have the most #PerfectPicnic to enjoy while you watch the show!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaison Bleue – Plan ahead and order your #perfectpicnic from this awesome downtown french cafe and bistro. SUMMARY:RBG
DESCRIPTION:RBG at BAMPFA  \nOctober 5th 4-6 PM  \nThis affectionate portrait of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an unexpected popular hit\, not unlike the tiny\, soft-spoken eighty-five-year-old jurist herself. The film looks beyond the SNL sketches and “Notorious” memes to outline Ginsburg’s role as a dissenting voice on an increasingly conservative court and her equally crucial earlier career as a patient and persistent litigator for women’s rights. Between glimpses of her workout routine\, her opera fandom\, and her collection of ornate judicial neckwear\, it also profiles her long partnership with the staunchest admirer of her legal mind\, husband Marty Ginsburg\, making the case that gender equality begins at home.

DESCRIPTION:Freight & Salvage Music Festival: Playing with Tradition\nSaturday\, September 22nd at 11AM\nFreight & Salvage \n\n\nJoin the Freight for the culmination of the Freight & Salvage’s 50th anniversary year with FREE Music Festival – a party on the street in front of the venue with multiple stages\, dancing\, food trucks\, and family-friendly activities – on Saturday\, September 22\, 2018. \nTraditional music is about connection—with our history\, with our understanding of the world and the divine\, and with one another. On the occasion of its 50th Anniversary\, the Freight & Salvage Music Festival celebrates and fosters these connections that keep traditional music thriving. Since it’s founding in 1968\, the Freight & Salvage has grown from a small coffeehouse into a world-famous venue for traditional music of many origins and genres. \nPerformances on three stages will include: \n\n\n\nFirst-time performance by a Bay Area Funk super-group featuring Zigaboo Modeliste (legendary drummer from The Meters) and Linda Tillery (soul\, R&B\, and folk vocalist and percussionist)\, with Will Bernard on guitar\, and Wil Blades leading the group as Music Director and performing on his Hammond organ.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBKO Quintet (from Bamako Mali\, mixing irresistible contemporary beats and grooves with traditional Malian instruments)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeausoleil (Cajun\, Zydeco\, folk)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBang Data (Latin cumbia\, hip-hop\, and rock) with Non-Stop Bhangra dance troupe\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd the Alphabet Rockers (hip-hop and social justice for families)\n\n\n\nInside\, on the Freight’s main stage\, Suzy Thompson (leading Bay Area traditional musician) will be curating a line-up of outstanding singer-songwriters. \n\n\nMore Info

We find comfort in the words of one graduate: “Dr. Coady never gave up on people\, even after they gave up on themselves.” Our grief only spurs our resolve to continue Davida’s vision of reaching out to the poor and imprisoned in finding the path to life-affirming sobriety and service. \nSIGN-IN & COFFEE: 9 AM\nWALK BEGINS: 10 AM\nBBQ: 12 PM \nSUGGESTED DONATION: $21 – one dollar for each year of Davida’s leadership at Options. SUMMARY:New Shoe Store Grand Opening at DOPP
DESCRIPTION:New Shoe Store Grand Opening at DOPP\nAugust 5th at 12PM\nDOPP located at 2115 Allston Way \nDOPP Local shoe designer Shayla Dopp is opening a retail space in Trumpetvine Court in downtown Berkeley. The space was formerly occupied by clothing boutique Endorphins. Dopp designs shoes in Oakland and works with a small factory in Los Angeles who hand-makes the final product. “The shoes are made from leather bi-product of the meat industry and are vibrant\, unique and comfortable\,” Dopp said. Before finding the space in downtown\, Dopp previously ran her business from home\, participating in every popup opportunity that came her way. She was immediately drawn to the architecture of the building in Trumpetvine where she said she feels at the heart of all the hustle and bustle. She enjoys the ambience of the garden courtyard of Jupiter and like-minded vendors\, too\, making it an ideal setting for her. “I love being in the center of all the arts and culture here. It’s a beautiful thought to envision all the talent surrounding the space\,” she said. A grand opening will be held Sunday Aug. 5\, from noon to 6 p.m. “I will be welcoming people in for a glass of lavender wine and [will have] a large array of colorful\, comfortable heels\,” she added. Dopp\, 2115 Allston Way #1\, Trumpetvine Court\, Berkeley 94704.
